Fun and educational British Cycling Go-Ride coaching sessions for children, in safe, traffic free environments.

What is Go-Ride cycle coaching

As a British Cycling Go-Ride club, Southborough run a series of Go-Ride sessions for 8 to 16 year old children. These are supervised and coached off-road riding lessons using British Cycling Go-Ride Gears Activity Workbooks embellished with additional challenges.

Go-Ride is British Cycling's development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills, cycling games and more competitive events. Further information on Go-Ride for Parents.

As well as the club's local Saturday morning sessions, many of the young riders take part in other events with other clubs. We run regular trips to Cyclopark for road riding and to Herne Hill Velodrome, riding single speed, fixed wheel hire bikes around London's only remaining venue still in operation from the 1948 Olympic Games. The outdoor track, dating back to 1891, where Bradley Wiggins began his cycling career, has recently been renovated with a new track surface and plans are in place to rebuild the clubhouse and grandstands. If your child gets the track racing bug, they might also like to try the school holiday clubs for 8 to 16 year olds. Children from under 8 to under 16 can also race in age specific Youth category races on purpose built circuits like Preston Park, CycloPark and Crystal Palace Park, as well as Cyclocross races for the relevant age groups (see further below for details of stepping up from Go-Ride).

Where, when and with who

Southborough's Go-Ride sessions are run weekly from March to November at a variety of locations both in the Tunbridge Wells area and further afield, with monthly visits to Cyclo Park Gravesend and at Herne Hill velodrome. For sessions in Tunbridge Wells we all meet at the Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar playground, although we also run a Cyclo cross session accross the road at Skinners School fields. Our sessions start at 9.30 am and run for an hour The sessions are run by the club's resident Go-Ride Coaches Alan Oakley, Martin Yardley, Bruce Sandell and Matt Kuwertz.

The coaching is delivered in a completely safe environment away from roads which enables young cyclists to challenge their riding skills and enjoy their bikes with other children.

How to take part

Due to the popularity of the club, we are having to put some clear guidelines in place for new members. We have three coaches and parent helpers, so have limitations on what we can currently accommodate.

·       Ages: minimum age 8 years old upto 15/16
·       Bicycles: all riders must be on a geared bike
·       Skill Requirement: competent rider, able to ride one handed
·       Coaching Objectives:

  • to improve rider’s skills and ability
  • promote safe recreational cycling
  • to encourage SDW youth riders to take part in competitive cycling - the club specialises in road, TT and CycloCross

NOTE: if you would like to find out more, please contact one of our British Cycling Go Ride coaches by email via the contact page.
