Results - SDW Cyclocross – 2018/19 Season

Results - SDW Cyclocross – 2018/19 Season – By Glen Whittington

I’ve compiled a list of results from the major races we’ve been involved in throughout the recent ‘cross season. Highlights include multiple U12 podiums from Theo, Jack claiming SDW’s first ever major win and Cameron proving he can be consistently strong throughout the season. Bryony also showed great strength to come back from a broken arm and we rounded off the season with a brilliant 3rd place in the Team Champs! Cheers especially to Bruce and Ed for helping me run the evening sessions and to help spread the word and enthusiasm about ‘cross in general.

HSBC National Championships at Cyclopark – Dry and cold – 12/1/19

This marks the first time we’ve had supported riders in the National Champs race. With super dry conditions, Bryony did a great job making use of Helen Wyman’s initiative to get junior and U23 girls racing. Cameron and Ed both struggled to make it through the pack and many back row starts for SDW highlighted the need for us to be at more National Trophy races to improve our gridding. Even so, Jacks brilliant ride to 26th in the Juniors was great to see, along with our friend Ben, winning the race.

V40 Winner Paul Oldham (Hope Factory) - 58/98 Ed Fraser.

Youth BM Winner Max Greensill (RRP) - 50/59 Patrick Lear, 51/59 Maurice Tate.

Youth AF Winner Zoe Backstedt (Backstedt) - 30/41 Bryony Fishpool.

Junior Winner Ben Tullett (IKO-Beobank) – 26/59 Jack Lear

Senior/U23 Winner Tom Pidcock (TP Racing) – 59/89 Cameron Preece (20/24 U23).

SE and E Regional Championships at Cyclopark – Muddy and cold – 2/12/18.

Held a month before but on the same course as the Nationals, the Regionals gave us a taste of what was to come. Theo scored a fantastic podium which at this level marks him out as one to watch in the future.

U12M Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 3/11 Theo Sandell.

Youth BM Winner Yani Djelil (Darenth) – 9/20 Jamie Scriminger, 11/20 Patrick Lear, 12/20 Maurice Tate.

Junior Winner Oliver Howsen (Paul Milnes) – 5/9 Jack Lear.

V40 Winner Steve Gibson (4T+) – 13/50 Ed Fraser, 40/50 Greg Tate, 43/50 Bruce Sandell.

Womens Winner Deliia Beddis (Les Filles) – 20/23 Pip Jenkins (7/8 Senior).

V50 Wiinner Phil Boarer (GS Vecchi) – 34/42 David Millis.

Senior Winner Alec Briggs (Tekkerz) – 14/47 Cameron Preece, 21/47 Glen Whittington.

SDW Club Champs at East Kent CX Rd.3 Northbourne – Muddy and warm – 4/11/18.

It was unclear whether Vets could join us in the Senior races but plenty did from various clubs – for SDW it came down to two riders in both races and there was plenty of scraping! Defending Champ, Pip, lost out narrowly to newcomer Rachel Jones in the Womens race. In the men’s Cameron and I swapped places for the entire race, pressuring each other into mistakes and some really close racing. Eventually his raw power won out and I came in a handful of seconds behind.

Senior M Winner Michael Butler (GLP) – 13/39 Cameron Preece (1/2 SDW), 14/39 Glen Whittington (2/2 SDW).

Senior F Winner Delia Beddis (Les Filles) – 16/19 Rachel Jones (1/2 SDW), 17/19 Pip Jenkins (2/2 SDW).

LCCA (LDN and SE Cyclocross) Team Champs at Ardingly – Muddy, sandy and cold – 10/2/19

Brilliant racing from everyone and a fantastic finale to the year. The Youth team’s result doesn’t reflect the hard work they put in, Patrick continued to ride with a dislocated thumb following a crash! His brother Jack proved his technical ability to race with the fastest riders to an incredible 8th place – along with Cameron’s 4th and 6th this was one of our best Senior results of a great season. Making it onto the podium as a team really put the icing on the cake.

U12 Team Winner Ruddervoorde Rascals – 8/10 SDW Youth/4T+ (inc. 4/31 Theo Sandell U12).

Senior Men Winner Neil Phillips (Kibosh) – 7/222 Cameron Preece,

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.1 Stanmer Park – Dry and dusty – 2/9/18.

Outrageously sunny and warm made the day fast and dusty. Most riders struggled in the heat and our riders needed to work on max power but it was nice to see Cameron racing well in his first Senior race.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 9/29 Theo Sandell (6/16 U12M)

Youth Winner Joe Blackmore (Darenth) – 48/60 Bryony Fishpool (5/7 YAF), 50/60 Felix Ledger (23/25 YAM).

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.2 Crystal Palace – Dry, dusty and windy – 16/9/18.

More of the same for round 2 at a historic venue. Bryony suffered a nasty crash caused by some other riders, but Jack shone in his first Junior race for SDW. He stayed up the order much like Ed in the Vets race. A brilliantly close battle between David and Scott was great to watch.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 7/31 Theo Sandell (4/17 U12M).

Youth Winner Luke Hazell (Darenth) – 34/64 Felix Ledger (20/25 YAM), 47/64 Todd Purchas (15/21 YBM), 48/64 Maurice Tate (16/21 YBM), DNF Bryony Fishpool (nasty crash and a broken arm)

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.3 Leeds Castle – Wet, windy and muddy – 23/9/18.

Theo gets himself on the podium for the first time in 2018/19 and this was quickly followed up by Jack in the Junior race. Ed moved a few places up to 7th in the Vets and Cameron scored another consistent top 20 in the wet muddy conditions.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth)– 4/23 Theo Sandell (3/14 U12M).

Senior Winner Neil Phillips (Kibosh) – 17/74 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.4 East Brighton – Dry and sunny – 30/9/18.

Patrick, joins his brother in the SDW cross family after a month of successful Thursday night sessions and both struggle with the flat course but clearly show promise. Ed gets a place closer to the front and Sean and Bruce record another pair of consistant results in the V40s. Pip manages to get into the top 10 (top 5 Senior) for the first time this season.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 8/24 Theo Sandell (5/13 U12M).

Senior Winner Patrick Hough (Lewes) – 16/59 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.5 Herne Hill – Warm and sunny – 7/10/18.

One of my favourite venues saw some fast dry racing and Cameron finally got into the top 10 after some really focused training. Made even more impressive by the fact that he’d taken the title of club Hill Climb Champ earlier that same day!

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 5/30 Theo Sandell (4/18 U12M).

Youth Winner Luke Hazell (Darenth) – 20/47 Felix Ledger (14/21 YAM), 27/47 Maurice Tate (9/15 YBM), 33/47 Todd Purchas (11/15 YBM).

Senior Winner Wilf Sinclair (Pearson) – 10/98 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.6 East Byshe – Dry and warm – 21/10/18.

Some great results across all cats, but what really impressed was Jack’s utter dominance of the three 30+ cm steps, which he rode up, to claim 2nd place!

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 5/19 Theo Sandell (4/11 U12M).

Youth Winner Stanley Platts (VCL) – 25 Patrick Lear (8/19 YBM), 29 Felix Ledger (13/17 YAM), 36 Todd Purchas (12/19 YBM), 37 Jamie Scriminger (13/19 YBM).

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.7 Preston Park – Dry, warm, then showers – 28/10/18.

A brilliant new venue saw Jack racing World Champ, Ben Tullett in the Juniors. Sean, Greg and Bruce had a close battle in the Vets on a proper old fashioned cross course. I raced closely with Cameron to begin with but his strength won out as he scored another fine top 20 result as the weather turned bad.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 5/18 Theo Sandell (4/11 U12M).

Youth Winner Joe Blackmore (Darenth) – 30/49 Patrick Lear (8/19 YBM), 33/49 Jamie Scriminger (9/19 YBM), 37/49 Maurice Tate (12/19 YBM).

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.8 East Brighton – Cool and Overcast – 25/11/18.

Patrick rode well and improved upon his last few results racing closely with Felix and Todd. Jack was frustrated to score 2nd again but we all reassured him that his time would come. The fast flat course was punctuated with some steep banks and off-camber corners.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 5/24 Theo Sandell (5/16 U12M).

Youth Winner Joe Blackmore (Darenth) – 21/46 Patrick Lear (8/19 YBM), 22/46 Felix Ledger (14/23 YAM), 32/46 Todd Purchas (13/19 YBM), 34/46 Jamie Scriminger (14/19 YBM).

V50 Winner Phil Boarer (GS Vecchi) – 56/57 Scott Purchas.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.9 Frylands – Cool and muddy – 9/12/18.

Theo scored another podium on the wet muddy course at Frylands and 2nd claim rider Matt Williams won the Juniors, with Jack in 4th after leading the race out. Patrick and Todd finished up the order and we welcomed Bryony back to racing just a few weeks on from her crash. Pip once again finished in the top ten and Cameron scored a brilliant 4th place in the Seniors – his best result of the year!

U12 Winner Peter Carpenter (Sutton) - 4/23 Theo Sandell (3/12 U12M).

Youth Winner Jules Reuter (HHYCC) – 19/43 Patrick Lear (5/15 YBM), 21/43 Todd Purchas (6/15 YBM), 34/43 Bryony Fishpool (3/6 YAF – great return to racing), 35/43 Jamie Scriminger (11/15 YBM), Felix Ledger DNF.

V40 Winner Dan Baines (C&N) – 30/67 Bruce Sandell, 34/67 Sean Fishpool.

Women Winner Caroline Reuter (London Phoenix) – 9/22 Pip Jenkins (3/8 Senior).

V50 Winner Jez Parsons (VC Jubilee) – 24/47 Dave Millis, 29/47 Scott Purchas.

Senior Winner Wilf Sinclair (Pearson) – 4/47 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.10 Somerhill – Cold, sunny and muddy – 22/12/18.

Our home race was a fantastic race thanks to Bruces hard work and a million of you who helped us. Thank you again for a brilliant day. Jack badly wanted a win and came so close, but Cameron was the star of the day in the muddy conditions, using his power to claim a well earned 7th place.

U10 Winner Noah Smith (Darenth) – 16/19 Josh Jones (12/14 U10M).

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 5/26 Theo Sandell (4/13 U12M), 19/26 Hannah Kuwertz (12/13 U12F), 20/26 Cameron Bonnell (8/13 U12M), 24/26 Zach Kuwertz (11/13 U12M).

Junior Winner Sam Bishop (Charlotteville) – 2/6 Jack Lear.

V40 Winner Steve Gibson (4T+) – 31/65 Keith Henderson, 38/65 Sean Fishpool, 57/65 Rob Ledger.

Womens Winner Louise Heywood Mahe (Les Filles) – 22/30 Pip Jenkins (9/10 Senior).

V50 Winner Jez Parsons (VC Jubilee) – 33 Stuart Mcilwham.

Seniors Winner Neil Philips (Kibosh) – 7/42 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.11 Hog Hill – Warm and overcast – 6/1/19.

...and finally... Jacko banishes all his demons to win his first ‘cross race on the bumpy Hog Hill. A mix of technical downhills and fast climbs suited him, Theo and Cameron making it a brilliant day all round for the young riders of SDW. The three future stars of cross showed genuinely clever tactics and strong legs to produce possibly SDW’s best ever day of ‘cross racing.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) – 3/22 Theo Sandell (3/11 U12M).

Youth Winner Luke Hazell – 16/31 Patrick Lear (5/10 YBM), 17/31 Maurice Tate (6/10 YBM), 23/31 Todd Purchas (8/10 YBM), 29/31 Jamie Scriminger (10/10 YBM).

Junior Winner (1/7) Jack Lear (1st major SDW win ever?).

V40 Winner Andrew Taylor (C&N) – 10/52 Ed Fraser, 32/52 Simon Miller, 37/52 Sean Fishpool, 44/52 Bruce Sandell, 45/52 Greg Tate.

Womens Winner Adeline Moreau (GVO-Mercredi) – 13/16 Pip Jenkins (5/7 Senior).

Senior Winner Jon Dennis (Kibosh) – 6/46 Cameron Preece.

LDN and SE Cyclocross Rd.12 Bexley – Cool and overcast – 26/1/19.

And then perhaps a day to forget for SDW. Pretty much everyone struggled on the underwhelming course at Bexley. Luckily most had secured good overall positions before this point. It was nice to see Simon properly back though scoring a seasons best in the V40s.

U12 Winner Oscar Amey (Darenth) -  6/22 Theo Sandell (5/12 U12M).

Youth Winner Joe Blackmore (Darenth) – 20/39 Felix Ledger (13/20 YAM), 32/39 Maurice Tate (10/12 YBM), 34/39 Bryony Fishpool (4/5 YAF), 39/39 Patrick Lear (12/12 YBM).
